This is a day-in-the-life flick that makes the mundane much funnier than expected. The only other choice, studio executives say, is to purpose for extra money overseas.
Always delightfully witty, at the same time as he strikes from cynicism to denial to opportunism to nihilism and ultimately to acceptance and hope, Phil Connors is one of the greatest comedy protagonists of all time. While the prose is the same, the story is seamlessly lifted to fashionable times, and contains a good ensemble of Whedon’s frequent collaborators. In explicit, Angel co-stars Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker deliver a spirited energy to the roles of Benedict and Beatrice, and are able to deliver highly effective renditions of the enduring dialogue. There’s also a scene stealing supporting position from Nathan Fillion as the incompetent cop Dogberry, a task made funnier due to Fillion’s interpretation as a steely, but inept lawman.
