Dune
It’s no surprise that the film, made by Denis Villeneuve, will fall into this category. Dune, which is based on the novel by Frank Herbert in 1965, provides a new experience of watching movies. Dune is a film that spoils the eyes with its desert scenery and action there. Then, the film is simply spectacular from the performance of Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides to the precise decision to break down the heavy source material into chapters more suited to contemporary audiences.

CODA
This film is a remake of the French film La Famile Belier. English speaking, CODA will be making history after their 3 deaf cast that nominate for Screen Actors Guild Awards. Then the film, directed by Sian Heder, focuses on Ruby Rossi, who only hears about her deaf family. The Rossi clan had to face the social and physical limitations that surrounded them. CODA’s treatment of their deaf character was refreshing. What’s more, it’s accurate, with all of Rossi’s members portrayed as members of their community with realistic personas.
Belfast
Belfast is director Kenneth Branagh’s homage to Northern Ireland’s The Troubles which continues to shape his perception of the world. Then, Belfast is a very personal, deeply touching project and one that the entire cast has picked up without hesitation. Belfast stars Northern Irish actors such as Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, and Caitríona Balfe. This drama is deeply rooted in historical tragedy.
The Power of the Dog
This psychological/Western drama directed by Jane Campion immediately caught the audience’s attention with the deconstruction of love, grief, revenge, jealousy and sexuality in Montana in 1925. This film is actually a Western (cowboy) film. But what makes The Power of the Dog extraordinary is his desire to dive beyond the typical cowboy machismo and understand the core that makes his key character so fitting. This can be seen in Phil Burbank, who was brought to life by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Drive My Car
Drive My Car is a complex and awesome film. The film revolves around Yusuke Kafuku who directs the multilingual production of Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima while also dealing with the grief of the death of his wife, Oto. Drive My Car is a simple film, with a core theme of sex, betrayal and loss. The film’s director is Ryusuke Hamaguchi, the third Japanese director ever to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar after Akira Kurosawa.
West Side Story
Stephen Spielberg brings a new approach to the West Side Story released in 2021. The film introduces newcomer Rachel Zegler, who plays Maria. This Oscar nomination for West Side Story supports Spielberg’s remake. The film was nominated for 11 award categories in 2022.

Nightmare Alley
The fantasy master Guillermo del Toro offers a new take on the neo-noir thriller Nightmare Alley. Based on the novel of the same name, this film tells the story of Stanton Carlisle, a fortune teller and his mentalist husband at a traveling carnival in New York in the 1940s. Using his newfound knowledge, Stanton creates a golden ticket to success by defrauding the elite and the rich. Hoping for a big payoff, he hatches a plan to trick a dangerous tycoon with the help of a mysterious psychiatrist who may become his archenemy.
Don’t Look Up
Adam Mckay, the director of this film, has the meaning to be a reflection of the many ills of society. The satirical film also provides a new voice for the science community, with climate scientists, in particular, feeling close to the frustrations of Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio). Even so, among the nominees in this category, Don’t Look Up is the weakest.
